What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complementary and safe therapy using the pressure of the therapists thumb and fingers to work on the feet bringing relaxation and aiding the body to heal itself. There are reflex points on the feet and hands that correspond to all the organs and systems of the body.
Why Reflexology?
Life can be stressful as we have demands on our time from sunrise to sunset. Our family friends and jobs require our full attention and we continually juggle these in our busy lives. With so much going on, it can be hard to actively carve out time for ourselves to recharge, relax and ensure we have the energy we want to devote to them all.
Reflexology treatments can be a way to find time for yourself, to allow you to press the ‘pause’ button on life so that when you press ‘play’ again you are recharged and ready to go. Reflexology is a holistic therapy that has been used for thousands of years. The therapist uses thumb and finger pressure to stimulate nerve endings in the feet and/or hands. The treatment contributes to general well-being by improving circulation, stimulating lymphatic drainage, and gently stimulates the release of toxins, allowing calmness and relaxation to the body.
What are the origins?
Reflexology as a pressure therapy has been used for thousands of years in Ancient Egypt, India and China. Artwork was found in Egyptian tombs dating back 2000 years depicting massage to hands and feet. Many eminent physicians have furthered the development of reflexology notably Dr William Fitzgerald and Dr George Riley whose assistant Eunice Ingham further developed ‘zone therapy’ in the early 1930’s and mapped the foot reflexes which was the start of reflexology as we know it today. It was Eunice’s work that recognised the mirror image of areas on the feet with corresponding areas in the body.
What to expect in a treatment?
Treatment is approximately an hour with the first session lasting a little longer.
You will need to remove only your socks and shoes and maybe roll up your trousers but otherwise remain fully clothed. The treatment begins by the feet being cleansed. A small amount of cream will be used during the treatment. The end of treatment the feet will be massaged for a few moments with some luxury foot cream.
You will be given a water to drink at the end of your treatment. It is essential to drink more water in the following 24 hours after treatment as the body rids itself of toxins.
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that aids the body to heal itself.
Regular reflexology sessions offer relaxation and although it is not a ‘cure all’ therapy it can help alleviate a variety of complaints. It should not be used as an alternative to medical advice but offers an excellent therapy for all stress related heath problems. It is recognised that a high proportion of health issues are affected by stress and tension such as:
· migraine
· sinus problems
· breathing disorders
· hormonal imbalances
· digestive and circulatory problems
· back pain
